Connaught Place to Chandni Chowk: Metro, Auto or Walk?

The Metro: fast, cheap, and the one most visitors should book

The Blue Line does this trip properly. Walk into Rajiv Chowk station from anywhere in Connaught Place, take the platform toward Yamuna Bank and get off at Chandni Chowk station after three stops. The ride itself is under ten minutes and a token or smart-card fare sits in the region of 20 to 30 rupees. Trains run every few minutes from roughly 6am to around 11pm, and the frequency means you rarely wait long even at midday. The catch is that Rajiv Chowk is one of the busiest interchanges in the network, so avoid the 9am to 10.30am and 5.30pm to 7pm crush if you can.

Chandni Chowk station drops you on the western edge of the old city, about a seven-minute walk from the Red Fort's Lahori Gate and a couple of minutes from the start of Chandni Chowk road itself. Exits are signposted in English. If you are staying in a Connaught Place hotel, this is the option I would book every time for a first visit: it removes the guesswork, costs almost nothing and leaves you fresh for the lanes. Buy a smart card at the Rajiv Chowk counter on day one and you skip the token queues entirely for the rest of your trip.

The Auto: door to door, and the traffic is the whole story

A pre-paid or app-hailed auto from Connaught Place to Chandni Chowk covers roughly 3.5 kilometres but can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes depending on where you are in the day. The bottleneck is usually the stretch around Ajmeri Gate and the approaches to the Red Fort, where the old city's roads narrow and the volume does not. Expect metered or app-quoted fares in the region of 80 to 150 rupees. Insist on the meter or agree the fare before you sit down. Autos cannot enter the narrowest lanes of Chandni Chowk itself, so you will be dropped near the main road and walk in.

The auto earns its place in two situations. First, early morning, before about 8.30am, when the roads are genuinely quiet and the ride is a smooth fifteen minutes. Second, if you are carrying shopping or travelling with someone who cannot manage stairs, since Rajiv Chowk's platforms involve a fair amount of walking and escalators that are not always working. Skip the auto at 5pm on a weekday. You will sit in the same jam you would have avoided underground, and the metro would have had you there in a third of the time.

Walking: worth it once, for the streets rather than the distance

The walk is 3.5 kilometres and takes about 45 to 55 minutes at an unhurried pace along Netaji Subhash Marg, past the Red Fort's walls into Chandni Chowk. It is flat and straightforward but not scenic in the way a visitor might hope: you are walking along a busy arterial road with traffic and little shade. Do it in the cooler months, roughly October to March, and start by 7am. Between April and September the heat and dust make this a poor use of a morning. There is no fee, obviously, and you will pass the Delhi Gate area and the edge of Daryaganj on the way.

What I would actually recommend is a hybrid: take the metro one way and walk back, or walk only the last kilometre from the Red Fort to the Fatehpuri Masjid end of Chandni Chowk. That final stretch is where the old city is at its best, with the paratha lane at Gali Paranthe Wali and the spice market at Khari Baoli within easy reach. Do that, and you get the atmosphere without spending an hour beside moving traffic. Carry water and keep valuables close in the crowds.

Where to base yourself for this trip

Connaught Place is the sensible base for a first New Delhi visit and that is clearly where demand is going: searches on this site are overwhelmingly for New Delhi hotels, and the views cluster around the central district. Staying within walking distance of Rajiv Chowk station means the whole Blue Line corridor, including Chandni Chowk, is a short hop away. Mid-range hotels in and around Connaught Place sit comfortably in the same bracket as comparable rooms in other Indian metros, and the location saves you taxi fares every day of the stay.

Book a room on the Inner Circle or within two or three streets of it if you want to walk to the metro without crossing major roads. The area around Janpath and the Outer Circle is quieter at night and still only ten minutes from the station. If you want the old city on your doorstep instead, Karol Bagh and Paharganj offer cheaper rooms but longer transfers to Chandni Chowk. For a trip built around sightseeing rather than nightlife, I would take Connaught Place every time, then use the metro as the daily workhorse.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is the metro from Connaught Place to Chandni Chowk safe for tourists?

Yes. Rajiv Chowk and Chandni Chowk are busy, well-lit stations with signage in English, and trains run until around 11pm. Keep bags zipped and avoid the deepest rush hours, roughly 9am to 10.30am and 5.30pm to 7pm, when carriages are packed.

How much does an auto cost from Connaught Place to Chandni Chowk?

Expect roughly 80 to 150 rupees for the 3.5-kilometre trip, depending on traffic and whether you use the meter or an app. Agree the fare first or insist on the meter. The ride takes 15 minutes early morning and up to 45 minutes in peak traffic.

When is the best time of year to walk between the two?

October to March, starting by 7am. The route along Netaji Subhash Marg is flat but exposed, with traffic and little shade. From April to September the heat and dust make the 45-minute walk unpleasant, and the metro is the better choice in those months.
